FLOATATION THERAPY THE FAQs
Might I be bored or frightened?
Anyone who floats regularly will tell you how wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable the experience is. As you lay back and relax in the warm tranquil water you can’t help but enjoy the experience of weightlessness.
What effects does floating have on the body?
In the gravity free environment the body balances and heals internally as all the senses are rested. Your nervous system will be relieved from the great strain that gravity causes. Research shows that floating measurably reduces blood pressure and heart rate whilst lowering the levels of stress related chemicals in the body. Old injuries and aches, (especially backache) experience relief as floating helps blood circulation and removes the stresses and strains from the muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. Floating is used widely in the treatment of stress, anxiety, jet lag and to improve concentration and creativity. Sports performance and ‘wind down’ is also enhanced during floating. Also, one hour of floating has the restorative effects of 4 hours of sleep! It is also fantastic using a floatation room in conjunction with other natural health treatments to deeply relax to absorb the treatment better. The Livelife Floatation Room is a part of the County Chiropractic & Wellness Centre so float tank sessions can be booked with Chiropractic, massage or dry needling treatments.
What effects does floating have on the mind?
During a float, you produce slower brain-wave patterns; known as theta waves, (normally experienced only during deep meditation or just before falling asleep). Both hemispheres of your brain begin to work as one, creating what is known as whole brain thinking. This is usually accompanied by vivid imagery, very clear, creative thoughts, sudden insights and inspirations or feelings of profound peace and joy, induced by the release of endorphins, the body’s natural opiates. Because of these effects, floating is used effectively in the treatment of depression and addictions, including smoking and alcohol. It is also used in schools and universities as tools for Super Learning.
What if I can’t swim?
Surprisingly, there is no feeling of being confined in a tight space because the floatation room is actually very spacious and airy. The underwater lights and twinkling star lights in the 2m high ceiling have a soothing effect helping to create a deeply relaxing environment. The floatation room is also easy to get in and out of as they do not have a hatch like float pods but rather a normal side door.
Can I wear a swimming costume?
There is no requirement to wear a swimming costume or trunks most people prefer to float naked as you would normally do in your own bath. However, it is your choice. Wearing swimwear will actually create a temperature difference on your body that may be detrimental to the relaxing weightless experience of floating.
Will my skin wrinkle?
No, because the water in the floatation room contains a high level of Epsom salts. Instead of salts passing through your skin (which is the cause of the wrinkles) your skin actually absorbs the magnesium solution leaving your skin feeling soft and silky.
What about my hair?
No, because the water in the floatation room contains a high level of Epsom salts. Instead of salts passing through your skin (which is the cause of the wrinkles) your skin actually absorbs the magnesium solution leaving your skin feeling soft and silky.
Can I have music inside the float tank?
There is gentle relaxing music played into the floatation room at the start and at the end of the session. You can choose to have this turned off. Just ask a team member before you have your float.
Is there anything else I should know?
Avoid shaving on the day of your float as freshly shaved skin may be irritated and thereby detract from the experience, contact lenses also need to be removed so please bring a case to put them in.
Might I be too heavy or too small to float?
No, everybody can float, but EN regulations state that children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult in the float room.
Will floating be successful for everyone?
Floating, as with other things doesn’t suit everyone just almost everyone. It needs willingness on your part to lay back, let go and relax. You may need to float a few times before you are able to relax completely, both physically and mentally. The more you float the better it gets. This is why we offer a special introductory block of three sessions to ensure you make the most from your floats and live life to the full…
Is there a limit to how much you can float?
Some people have their own float tanks and sleep in them regularly. They claim that they need less sleep that way than in normal sleep. You could certainly float every day without harm. We also find that the relaxing effect of a one hour float lasts all day and more. Many people float regularly once or twice a month to improve and maintain their health and well-being.
What if I fall asleep, is it safe if I do?
Some people do fall asleep and others feel like they have been asleep when in actual fact they have been in an extremely deep level of relaxation. Either way it’s completely safe, you float comfortably on your back with no tendency to turn over, by the end of the session you come to with your body and mind completely refreshed.
Is it true that floating cures jet lag?
Yes. Research shows that floating is much more effective than bed-rest.
Can I give a float session as a gift?
Yes, gift vouchers are available. They can be arranged over the phone or during your visit.
Is this a new idea?
People have been floating in the Dead Sea for centuries but floating in float centres has only become popular over the past 40 years and to date, hundreds of thousands of people have enjoyed float sessions in float centres around the world. So yes, it is relatively new but it now is a well-established and researched therapy for deep relaxation and stress relief.
