FLOATATION THERAPY
Floatation Therapy: Achieving Deep Relaxation with Floating
Experience the ultimate relaxation with floatation therapy, also known as floating. This unique treatment involves relaxing in a super saturated Epsom salt solution that enables you to lay back and float effortlessly on the surface of the water. By being completely free from the forces of gravity, every single muscle in the body is allowed to totally relax without the usual strain of gravity on the body’s postural alignment.
At our Wellness Centre in Exeter, we have a specially designed floatation room filled to a depth of 25cm (10″) and carefully heated to the temperature of 35.5̊c, which is correct for maintaining the body’s natural temperature without muscular action. This profound state of relaxation increases the secretion of endorphins into the body, creating powerful effects on all levels of your being: physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. It provides your body with the opportunity to use its amazing powers of recuperation.

We get asked a lot of questions about Floatation Therapy. Here are some of the more common ones.
What do I bring?
Just an open mind, a towel and a tired body! We also have a hair dryer should you require the use of one. In order to do our bit for the environment and keep the price of floatation as low as possible we do ask that you bring your own towel. You may use one of our towels at the cost of £3 if you forget to bring your own one.
I’m claustrophobic will I enjoy it?
Surprisingly, there is no feeling of being confined in a tight space because the floatation room is actually very spacious and airy. The underwater lights and twinkling star lights in the 2m high ceiling have a soothing effect helping to create a deeply relaxing environment. The floatation room is also easy to get in and out of as it does not have a hatch like float pods but rather a normal side door.
Is it private?
Yes, the float room is contained within the floatation suite which has a lockable door and is for your exclusive use for the duration of your session. There is also a shower and changing area within your private floatation suite.
What is the salt in the water?
The soft silky water is created by using large amounts of the purest quality Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulphate), which is found naturally in many spa waters. Our tank holds 750kg of salt in the water. It is very different from sea salt or table salt which is mainly Sodium Chloride. Epsom Salt has been used for centuries to treat numerous ailments and is commonly used as a medicine to correct common deficiencies and skin complaints. The salty solution is non-toxic, it won’t harm you if you swallow some, but try not to as it has a really strong salty taste. We use Epsom salts for two main reasons, because it raises the density of the water by 25% making it much easier to float and for the wide range of benefits associated with Magnesium Sulphate. How is water hygiene maintained?
We have to comply with stringent health and safety regulations. The water in the flotation room is naturally sterile due to its high salt content, so no harmful viruses or bacteria can live in the water. The floatation room filters the water three times after every floatation session and we test the water on a regular basis adding a limited amount of swimming pool sterilizing agents when necessary.
I’m pregnant. Can floating harm my baby?
Absolutely not! In fact heavily pregnant women probably get more relief from the float room than anyone else. Just lying on a bed can be extremely uncomfortable for women in the later stages of pregnancy due to massive gravitational strain placed on the body. The float room is a wonderful haven to which pregnant women can escape. Pregnancy and Birth magazine gave floatation 10 out of 10 as a useful pregnancy therapy!
